MY KINGDOM
FOR A LIGHT

Exhibition by Tiler Gab

Commissioned by MIRA Festival

October 7, 2023 – January 7, 2024

Venue: Montjuïc Castle, Barcelona

“My Kingdom for a Light”, Tiler Gab’s first monographic exhibition, features three new works: Ten untold stories, III and Untitled Colors.

“My Kingdom for a Light” is a play on King Richard’s famous last words in “Richard III”. A forever reminder that material objects around us are many and variable. That anything can potentially change its meaning at any time. And what might be overlooked and insignificant could become just what one needs.

The work of Tiler Gab allows light to change reality, challenge memories encapsulated in space, and amplify points of view. It interacts with the public directly reclaiming the viewer’s gaze while asking for its patience and complicity as the story unfolds.

TEN UNTOLD STORIES

“Ten Untold Stories” is a series of ten light compositions that exist across the 140-meter-long passageway of Castell de Montjuïc. The installation invites a journey through and beyond the memories of the space.

The interplay of the light reflections, natural materials to the environment, and a spatialized soundscape amplified by the acoustic of the passage will emphasize the architectural details of the historical building and at the same time, create new encounters and narratives in the well-known space. A moment to observe with fresh eyes the weight of what’s always been there.

Tiler Gab opens up the possibility for new stories to emerge behind the walls of the iconic landmark of Barcelona, the Castle of Montjuïc, through an in situ art installation.

The Installation is presented with the support of INFiLED Spain.

UNTITLED COLORS

In a world where our daily lives often pass by in a blur of routine, Tiler Gab invites us to pause and reconsider the ordinary in an extraordinary way. “Untitled Colors” is a large-scale photographic work that embarks on a profound journey into the relationship between subject, object, light, and color.

The manipulation of scale in this piece serves as a catalyst for contemplation. It prompts us to question the boundaries of our perception, to challenge our preconceived notions of size, and to ponder the significance of the seemingly insignificant. Everyday objects become extraordinary, and the familiar is rendered unfamiliar.

III

Continuing his exploration of light, color, and space Tiler Gab presents a new piece called “III”. A light installation stemming from a monochromic geometrical monologue which gradually develops into a polyphonic scheme of colors that blend, combine and change according to the point of view of the visitor and its perspective.

In this artwork, the light asks the body to be curious. To move so it can perceive a shift in reality: the interplay of colors. It is through movement that light transcends and becomes choral: it mixes, disappears and multiplies thanks to the ever-present stance of the viewer.

The work was developed in collaboration with Panasonic Connect Europe.

Installation runs until November 15th, 2023.
